About
We want the first sign of a fire to be a forecast, not smoke.
AfterStrike started with one question after Black Summer: of the tens of thousands of strikes in a dry storm, which ones will still be burning in three days? The science says it can be answered. Nobody had built it to run every morning.
Mission
Catch lightning fires while they’re still sparks.
Most fire technology waits for a fire to show itself: a camera sees smoke, a satellite sees heat. By then a smouldering strike has had days to grow. We work in the gap before that, when the only evidence is the storm itself.
We build in the open. Every claim we make is on the proofs page, including the places where the model doesn’t work yet, because the people who rely on it need to know exactly how far to trust it.
Australia is where we prove it. The same physics applies in Canada, the western United States and southern Europe, and that’s where we’re going next.
The mark is a diamond split by a lightning bolt.
The upper facet is the sky the strike comes from. The lower facet is the fire front it could become. The bolt between them is the moment we work in.
Principles
How we work.
Out of sample, always
We only report results on storms the model had never seen.
Explain every flag
A ranked list nobody can question is a ranked list nobody will use.
Partners own their data
Agency records stay under agreement, in country, and improve the model they use.
